What do you do with your stuff?

I went to our local Virgin Active gym the other day and on the walls were a number of posters. Each poster had the picture of a person with a t-shirt declaring that person’s “stuff”. The one says that she is a “control freak”, the next one suffers from diabetes, and the next says she is a workaholic. The list goes on. The “movement” of sharing our stuff was started by Richard Branson – the founder of the “Virgin” brand. He says very wisely, that “we all have stuff.” The solution, Branson says, is for everyone to share their stuff and then we will all realise that our “stuff” is not such a big deal after all. We are all in the same boat. Once we honestly shared our “stuff” we can live “happily ever active lives”!

Richard Branson got it right. We do all have “stuff” Some people’s stuff are more serious than others. He says that he “cannot say ‘no’”; a workaholic is maybe not as bad as an alcoholic, but the consequences of our stuff are generally the same – a breakdown in relationships, in families, in the end unhappiness, sadness, loneliness – and so on.

I think that Mr. Branson must have read the Bible – Paul says exactly the same thing to the church in Rome. We live in a fallen world that is full of sin. In this world there are diseases, there is unhappiness, people become obsessive about things such as work or alcohol. He says that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23). Mr. Branson – you’ve got it spot-on! We all have stuff. That stuff is sin, the consequences of our sin, or simply the consequences of living in a sinful world. This is a serious thing. Paul goes on to say that “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). So, if we do not deal with our “stuff”, we are in serious trouble.

Richard Branson’s solution is easy – all you have to do is to go on to their website and share your stuff. To live an active life and to exercise is brilliant. I think we should all do that and do it regularly. After all, we are stewards of the physical bodies God gave us and what is more – as a Christian, your body is a holy temple in which the spirit of God resides.

Sharing your “stuff” on the website and regular exercise is good for you, but it is not the solution. Paul gives the real solution in the rest of Romans 6:23: “but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord”. Jesus suffered on the cross so that He can take the punishment of your sin on His shoulders. Jesus Himself declared that “the Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released [from their stuff!], that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free, and that the time of the Lord’s favour has come.” (Luke 4:18-19).

So what will you do with your stuff? Are you willing to lay it before the cross of Jesus Christ and accept what he has done for you or will you continue to fight it, never really getting over it and suffering the consequences to eternity?

God said to the ancient Israelites: “See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction.” (Deut 30:15) – you choose …
